South Wales Evening Post

REFERENCE your news item about the voting activities of the three Labour MPs in Swansea regarding a bill to introduce gay marriage (Post, Feb 7), I wonder how many readers of this newspaper were canvassed so they could represent those views in Parliament?

I doubt if any were, and this is typical of how little they care for their constituents' concerns.

It is even more worrying as they all had a free vote, and as this most important subject was not included in the Labour Party manifesto, all electors should have been consulted.

We are told the EU is to introduce a bill to allow gay marriage throughout Europe, so perhaps our government are getting in first to show what good Europeans we are.

Apart from a few Tory MPs, they are well supported by the biggest EU lovers of all, the Labour Party. Remember this is the party who, not so many years ago, were the most anti-EU! Now, they even outclass the Appeasement Party (formerly known as the LibDems).

Never in living memory have so many citizens been so badly served by so few parliamentarians (with apologies to the RAF).

“Further to K Roberts anti EU rant. This week it was announced that during the early summer talks will begin between the EU and the USA about the setting up of a free trade zone. This will be a massive step towards globalization.

Talks will focus on harmonizing standards, and will also include the removal of tariffs on agriculture which will prove very difficult. It is estimated that GDP in the new trade area will grow by £150 billion.”

“The whole point about having a free vote is that you vote what you'r convictions tell you . Does Mr Roberts expect all MP's to canvas his constituants on every vote he takes, no of course he does'nt he is just beating a drum against gays”

“I wonder if Welsh secretary David Jones will say in his job in light of his statement on gay marriage after claiming same-sex couples could not provide a "warm and safe environment" in which to raise children. To me this sounds like something out of the 1950's, It makes me so sad that people still have this out of date view in this day and age.”

“Once my MP is voted into office he uses his judgment to do as he sees fit. If i don't like it then i and all the others who live in his constituency have the chance to vote him out.

It also comes as no surprise to me that someone who is anti gay marriage is also anti EU. Never mind the more people we have like this the more votes the Tory party will lose to UKIP, thus giving us a Labour gov.”

“Mr Roberts raises an issue that has been the subject of political debate for centuries. Should elected representatives be delegates who merely just vote as they have been told, or, do we rely on their judgement and if we dont agree with them reflect that when the seek re-election. This is the core of our present DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM.”
