THOUSANDS of Swansea schoolchildren are eligible for free school meals - but many still don't take up the entitlement.
Eligibility criteria involves receipt of one of a specific list of welfare payments.
Pupils at nursery on a full-time basis are also eligible. In Swansea, the latest figures show that 3,805 primary school pupils and 2,615 secondary school pupils took up the free school meal entitlement.
The equivalent figures for Neath Port Talbot were 2,473 primary school pupils and 1,752 secondary ones. The Carmarthenshire figures were 2,661 primary pupils and 1,577 secondary ones.
Swansea cabinet member for education Will Evans said: "I hope parents will check out if their child may be eligible for a free school meal."
