Go back in time to find an historic lighthouse
ewcomers to walking are finding the Swansea Ramblers Saturday short walk programme is taking them places they never knew existed and showing them views of Gower that you just don't get from driving the peninsula and last Saturday, 31 people took the opportunity to enjoy the magic of Gower.
One area that you really can't see in a car is Cwm Ivy. Located just past Llanmadoc on the north-western tip of Gower, an afternoon's walk takes you to a fine beach, a historic Cast-iron Lighthouse and nature reserves in forest and woodland.
Leave the car park and follow the road downhill to a gate. Continue to descend to a forest junction. Here in spring you may see hundreds of cowslips. Ignoring the junction, continue straight on to reach dunes and a three-way Wales Coast Path sign. Turn right and follow the path onto Whiteford Sands then turn right on the beach. It's almost two miles to Whiteford Point and if you choose to visit the lighthouse, the round trip adds about a mile to your walk. Make sure you go at low tide not to get cut off by a fast returning sea!
Rounding the point, watch for more coast path signs and head inland through forest and onto the marsh road towards more forestry. At a tall signpost just before these woods, turn left along an old sea wall built to reclaim land from the sea. When you reach the gate, turn right at the signpost to enter the Cwm Ivy woodland walk. From this path through deciduous woodland, you will have views over the reclaimed land and forestry. Emerging onto the road you originally walked down, turn left and head uphill back to the start.
Tomorrow, Gail leads another interesting 7 mile walk at Cwm Wernderi, meet 9.30 a.m.by Swansea Guildhall. On Thursday, Steve & Julia lead a 7 mile walk in the popular area of Parkmill and Green Cwm.
