'I can't live here anymore - it's been ruined by students'
A SWANSEA man says he is considering quitting his Brynmill home because the area has become swamped by students.
David Wilson claims his attempts to remedy the problems caused by houses of multiple occupancy has seen the council accuse him of harassment — something it denies.
-

Brynmill resident David Wilson among the rubbish bags piled up along Bryn Road Swansea which he says have not been collected for 12 days
Now the 63-year-old is considering selling up, he said: "I have lived here 63 years and it's become swamped by students.
"It's got to the point where I can't put up with it anymore, it's dreadful.
"Years ago it used to be a beautiful area. The building of this university is the worse thing to happen to this city."
Mr Wilson claims that the students have caused a huge rise in antisocial behaviour and problems such as fly-posting and rubbish left in the street.
He said: "They are only here for one thing — partying.
"The council has written the area off. It's got to the stage where the community is devastated.
"I'm one of the few homeowners left surrounded by houses of multiple occupancy. There are only five of us left on the road.
"I could take you to any street in Brynmill and it's the same. I'm paying £150 a month in council tax, I have told the council they should be paying me to live here."
Of the council's attitude to his complaints, he added: "The council won't respond to me anymore and has accused me of harassing them."
A council spokesman denied this, adding that the authority has worked to deal with Mr Wilson complaints.
He said: "Council officers have met with Mr Wilson and responded to a large volume of letters relating to a number of different issues in recent years.
"We regularly carry out clean-ups in Bryn Road when complaints are received about litter.
"Letter drops have also been completed in the area to remind residents of their responsibilities when it comes to disposing of household waste. We will continue to investigate items of waste that have been placed out for collection either on the wrong week or too early and will carry out enforcement procedures when necessary."
Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Swansea University said: "Swansea University completely understands the distress that can be caused by antisocial behaviour and, with the full support of the Students' Union, operates a residents' complaints scheme in partnership with the council's environment division, the police and the Safer Swansea Partnership's anti-social behaviour team."

“I don't understand why students have enough money to go partying 2-3 times a week but are exempt from council tax. As a graduate who managed to save money whilst at university I see nothing wrong with making students pay for the services that they (ab)use just like the rest of society.”

“This problem as been on going on for a number of years now and no one seems to know how to solve the problem. Two councillors went round the area on a Sunday taking photographs as reported in the evening post they were councillor's Peter May and Stuart Rice.
The question is what have they done nothing, well how easy is it to solve the problem you may ask. Simple it does not take rocket sceince, all social landlords are or should be registerd with local councils and the landlords should have contracts with their tenants signed. The council only have to identify the property and contact the registerd landlord and give him notice to clean up the property within 24 hours or the council can clean up the rubbish and charge the landlord. If the council deem this to be a health hazard then they can immeidiatley clean up the area and once again bill the landlord because he is responsible to provide facilities for rubbish disposal and he can then sort out the payment with his tenants.
What Swansea council are doing is shirking their duties and the director of environment can be prosecuted for allowing the streets of Swansea becoming infested with vermin as that person is responsible for the cleanliness of the city on behalf of the council, so come on councillors May and Rice get to know your duties to your electors in the ward you representand solve their problem.”

“I lived in Brynmill for 9 years and just recently moved. It was getting worse and worse every year, on the street I lived there were just two houses with permanent residents, I had to sell my car because you could never park anywhere near your home and cars were damaged on a nightly basis.
In the summer it was lovely after the students went home, peace, plenty of parking room.
We even lost a bus service because it couldn't get around corners due to illegal parking.”

“Ultimately this is about civic pride. When I lived in Brighton there were similar problems, not just student related but a result of multiple occupancy properties with transients. Here today gone in a few months. When people live in an area for a long time and treat it as their home then they tend to care more. People in a strange town for a short period don't care, next year they're gone. Furthermore, as I said before, no matter what the failings are on the council for not tackling rubbish enough, if people really cared about their immediate environment they'd find a way.
I do think Mr Wilson is being unfair with his comments about the university although I do understand his sentiment. My family live in Brynmill and the state on some student properties is an absolute disgrace and evey year we have to put up with fly tipping at the end of the academic year. I do not buy the argument about the dump being too far and not having a car. Fly tipping is a criminal offence and in the summer, someone in Llansamlet was jailed for 8 months for repeatedly offending in this way. It's not fair to blame the landlords entirely as well. When I lived in rented accommodation, part of my tenancy agreement included a responsibility to keep the front of the property tidy and free of rubbish. The tenants should be encumbered with this responsibility.
The disappointing thing about this whole situation is that a significant number of the comments here are about apportioning blame. It's the council's fault, it's the students' fault, it's the landlords' fault. When it comes to the environment and civic pride EVERYONE has a responsibility.”

“How long have you been living here, please answer. If you been there for many years I understand, but if your unhappy the best thing is to move. Or call on your local MP who I'm sure will sort it out.”

“As long as houses are regarded as things to make money from rather than places to live in, then this will continue to happen. The system we live in encourages people to try and make a fast buck from anything - absolutely anything - and governments encourage it too. Sorry, Dave, that's the root of the problem.”

“T'is the Season of Goodwill toward men,but Scrooge is alive and well in Brynmill.
Has he ever spoken to his neighbours about their behaviour and/or rubbish?
He could do is bit by helping these young folk by perhaps finding a place to store the bags until collected.”

“I feel for Mr. Wilson, I use to live in Mount Pleasant after 10 years I had to move because of SCUM landlords and SCUM students, landlords only in it for a fast buck and rip off the students who sometimes lived in a S---hole, I know as I went into a few properties with students living there to confront the prats playing music 3 in the morning or throwing rubbish about the streets, COUNCIL ARE A WASTE OF SPACE (think some owned properties but could not prove it), landlords reading this know who I am as I complained often strange they did not live in area, local councillor at time did not want to know he was an PRAT. Now living in Llansamlet so thanks SCUM landlords as it is heaven. Mr. Wilson leave that ****hole area as the council WILL NOT help you”
