No surprise over child poverty
I AM not surprised at the report (Evening Post, February 20) which shows there is real poverty for children in Wales.
Over the years this has not changed whatever the Welsh Government has tried. Without jobs and the opportunity for work we will never be able to reduce child poverty. We have seen many large employers leave for other areas and not be replaced, the closure of coal mines and steel works in the 1980s as well as other industrial jobs.
We have seen the average wage for the manual workforce eroded as job opportunities diminish.
The days of 4- or 5-year apprenticeships have long gone.

During the budget process the Welsh Liberal Democrats tried to reintroduce free travel for the under-16s in school holidays but Labour Party councillors turned down our amendment.
We will continue to fight to have this measure reintroduced.
