We can win everyone's respect, says Sousa

Thursday, November 26, 2009, 10:00

PAULO Sousa reckons Swansea City can earn the respect of the Championship by triumphing at Newcastle United this weekend.

No visiting team has won at St James' Park since Fulham edged the Toon towards relegation from the Premier League in May.

Despite turmoil in the boardroom and uncertainty in the dugout, Newcastle have since allayed fears of a struggle in the second tier by storming to the top of the table.

Chris Hughton's star-studded squad have won seven and drawn two of their nine home games so far — but Sousa believes his in-form Swans can halt their run. "If we could win on Saturday it would be important because we would get respect from everyone, especially our opponents," said the Swansea manager.

"Having that respect means something when you start games, and that's something we are looking for.

"I think we could earn respect from every other team in our division if we could beat Newcastle."

Swansea head north having not lost in 11 matches, though they still trail Newcastle by eight points.
