IN FOR McGinn
Thursday, November 20, 2008, 08:00
The 21-year-old was this week named The Professional Footballers' Association of Ireland's Young player of the year and is believed to have attracted the attention of Chelsea, Celtic and Ipswich Town.
But Roberto Martinez has joined the race for McGinn, who landed a double whammy by earning a call up to the full Northern Ireland squad for last night's friendly against Hungary at Windsor Park.
McGinn can play on the left or right side of midfield, but can also operate up front, which would offer Martinez a number of options.
Various rumours reported it could take anything between £100,000 to £250,000 to prise Derry's star man away from Brandywell Stadium.
But talk of a similar move which saw Ashley Williams heading to the Liberty Stadium on loan last season before clinching a record move from Stockport County is a non-starter.
It is not possible for the Dungannon-born talent to head to Wales until January, as Swansea can only borrow players on loan from the English system under current transfer rules.
But Martinez, who is believed to be looking at a number of other players, could renew interest in the highly-rated youngster come the New Year.
Despite the firm interest, McGinn turns his attention to Sunday's FAI Cup Final against Premier Division champions Bohemians at the RDS in Dublin.
Since joining Derry in January earlier this year, McGinn has proved a massive hit.
But he is not allowing himself to be disrupted by the interest shown in him.
"You never know what's around the corner," he said. "Yes, of course I would like to further my career and if a move to another club does materialise and both Derry City and myself are happy, then who knows what would happen.
"That said, I've been very happy at Derry City since I arrived.
"My priority is now the FAI Cup final next Sunday.
"I think it will be a great occasion and a great way to end the season."
