Malcolm finishes fifth in Olympic final

Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 09:00

CHRISTIAN Malcolm finished fifth in this afternoon's 200m final in Beijing at the Bird's Nest Stadium.

The Welsh sprinter crossed the line in 20.40seconds in a final dominated by Jamaican Usain Bolt, who broke Michael Johnson's record by finishing in an amazing 19.30s to take his second gold medal at the Olympics.

The 29-year-old had originally finished seventh but Churandy Martina of the Dutch Antilles and American Wallace Spearmon – who came home in silver and bronze medal positions -  ran out of their lanes.

That meant American duo Shawn Crawford and Walter Dix were handed the silver and bronze medals.

"My race didn’t go too well today," Malcolm said. "I should have run a better bend and I didn’t. That is to do with a lack of races at competitive level. It was a bit of a gamble but it paid off by reaching the final.

"I have missed a couple of years to injuries so I feel 25 or 26 and I want to gain those years back."
