Gillespie and Harris return for Glamorgan

Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 09:00

PACE pair Jason Gillespie and James Harris return to bolster Glamorgan's hopes of launching a Pro40 promotion push over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Aussie Ashes star and the young Pontarddulais all-rounder have been named in a 13-man squad for the division two matches against Warwickshire Bears (Friday), Essex Eagles (Sunday) and Northamptonshire Steelbacks (Monday) — games which will define the Dragons' 40-over campaign.

Matthew Maynard's men are well placed in fourth in the division two standings with two wins from three outings, and with the top two earning automatic promotion and the third-place finisher going into an end-of-season play-off, Glamorgan know a couple more victories will put them in firm contention.

Gillespie is back after missing the rain-ravaged county championship match with Gloucestershire because of a hamstring strain, while Harris returns from England Under-19 duty.

The Bears, though, are also in contention, one place above the Dragons on run rate. Tomorrow's floodlit match starts at 4.40pm.

Meanwhile, Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes has insisted that the latest knee setback suffered by Llanelli paceman Simon Jones is not a long-term concern.

Jones, who has made a massive impact at New Road since his move from Glamorgan in the winter, will undergo an arthroscopy during the next few days after suffering cartilage damage.

Rhodes said: "It is a wear-and-tear injury and is a result of a career as an impact fast bowler. It (the arthroscopy) is just a service really and I am confident he will be fine in the long term.

"Simon is a bit down. He is sick to the back teeth with injury problems and he is disappointed not to reach some of the targets he has set himself, such as 50 championship wickets this season.

"But he has done marvellously for us. He's made the England selectors notice him and to make the initial squad for the Champions Trophy was a fantastic effort.

"The goal was to get him through to the end of the season, and we almost got there, but if you had asked me at the start of the season, I'd have settled for what we've had from Simon during the past four months."

Glamorgan: D. Hemp (capt), R. Croft, M. Powell, T. Maynard, J. Dalrymple, B. Wright, M. Wallace, A. Wharf, J. Gillespie, D. Cosker, D. Harrison, J. Harris, R. Grant.
