Fired-up Enzo targets old belt

Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 09:00

ENZO Maccarinelli has vowed to show his mean streak as he bids to win his old WBO belt back.

The Swansea star goes head to head with undefeated American Johnathon Banks for a shot at the cruiserweight crown in a bout that has been put back a month.

The fight was originally pencilled in for next month but the pair are now likely to clash in the first week of October in a contest which will also have Banks's IBO title at stake.

A venue is also to be decided, with Cardiff, Birmingham or Manchester the leading contenders.

And Maccarinelli is burning with fury as he looks to make up for his second round defeat by David Haye in March.

"Everyone who knows me thinks of me as a nice guy outside the ring, but at this point in time I can't wait to get in the ring and do some damage," said Maccarinelli.

"Banks is facing someone that is very, very fired up right now. My nasty head is ridiculous at the moment. Just watch me in the gym and you will see everything I'm hitting is full of nasty intent.

"The fight was going to be Alexander Alekseev because Banks wouldn't have been ready in time after his last fight.

"But, now it has been put back, he (Banks) has accepted the fight.

"To be honest, though, it wouldn't have bothered me who I fought or where I fought. At this point in time all I want to do is fight."
