A SWANSEA teenager who disappeared 100ft over a cliff to chase one of his beloved new trainers is recovering at home — with a new pair of daps.

His relieved mum, Jo Vaughn, said she is just grateful that Felix is okay after the family trip to West Wales went wrong.

Miss Vaughn admitted her 14-year-old son was "pratting about" at the top of Constitution Hill, a beauty spot at Aberystwyth, before sparking a major rescue with his 10-storey tumble.

And she wanted to thank everyone involved, plus staff at the local hospital, for their help.

Miss Vaughan, of Shaw Street, Gowerton, explained how she'd wanted to explore a bit of Wales with Felix and her 11-year-old daughter Tiggy, having recently moved to the area from Essex.

At the top of Constitution Hill, Miss Vaughn sat down with a hot chocolate in the cafe while her two children went outside.

She found out later that Felix had kicked some stones over the edge of the cliff, accidentally sending one his new £20 Quicksilver trainers flying because the laces were untied.

She said: "He thought he had to get it back, so he started going down after it and then hit some loose stones, and slid down around 100ft.

"It must have been the ride of his life.

"He grabbed hold of a rock, and realised he couldn't get up again."

The rescue swung into action after a member of staff, Jonathan, phoned the coastguard and also his dad, who calmed Felix's frantic mum down throughout the ordeal.

A paramedic was next on the scene, telling Felix to keep still, before a rescue helicopter came from Anglesey, and winched him up.

"The hospital checked him over," said Miss Vaughn.

"He was cold, and he's got some big bruises on his legs.

"But I am ecstatic he is okay."

She said there was no need for fencing at the spot where Felix, a pupil at Gowerton Comprehensive School, descended.

"It was his own fault — there's no way that this beauty spot should be spoiled," she said.

"I feel I'm responsible as well.

"He is 14, but I should have made sure I knew where he was."

The family's trip down west continued with a trip to the shops — to buy a new pair of trainers.
