DJ Chris Needs speaks of death threats over his sexuality
The Cwmavon-born broadcaster has told of the vitriol and abuse he has suffered from people in Wales.
In the second volume of his autobiography, published this month, he writes of his desperate desire to have children.
But he says some people have questioned whether he should even be allowed to have his godson, Sam.
"Some people here in Wales have been really cruel to me," writes Needs in And There's More, the aptly-named follow- up to his best-selling first volume, Like It is.
"I still get a lot of insults about my sexuality and this makes it much harder to hang on to the job.
"I love what I do in the radio studio, talking to people and, of course, the music. But is it worth it?"
Years after getting a lift in Richard Burton's car as a youngster, Needs started in showbusiness as a keyboard player.
When Welsh language TV Soap Pobol y Cwm needed an actor to play the part of a hairdresser in 1995, he decided he fitted the bill and was invited to the audition, but ended up playing a detective.
He has thousands of radio listeners and more than 50,000 members of the imaginary Chris Needs Friendly Garden.
He will be touring bookshops next month, including Borders, Fforestfach, Friday, December 4, 1pm to 3pm; WH Smith, Neath, Tuesday, December 8, 11.30am to 12.30pm; and Waterstone's, Carmarthen, Wednesday, December 16, 11.30am to 1.30pm.
Chris Needs.
