PATIENTS and visitors have been ignoring the no smoking rules at Swansea's Singleton Hospital.

Community health councillors picked up on it during a routine inspection.

They have since had a response from Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board.

Director of planning Paul Stauber said: "Stopping smoking on the hospital site is a challenge and is difficult to control."

Mr Stauber said one of ABMU's objectives was reducing cardiovascular disease.

That objective, he said, could be partly achieved by reducing smoking levels.

"The board has approved a tobacco control strategic action plan," he added.

"This includes plans to support staff and patients to quit smoking and making hospital sites smoke-free areas."

Mr Stauber said additional signs had been placed onsite, reminding people it was meant to be a smoke-free area.

"Monitoring walkabouts are undertaken and people are approached and requested not to smoke," he added.

“If that is the case why are there ashtrays outside? The no smoking in the grounds is purely hospital policy....not law”

“This was a non-starter from the beginning - it is the same all over the UK.....hospitals spend a fortune putting up signs, bigger signs, posters, MASSIVE posters all to no avail. You will never stop these people smoking if that is what they want to do.....insufficent staff to police the areas and the smoking just carries on. Also, staff will be fearful of receiving a thump if they approach a smoker who will NOT be told..
Why don't the authorities admit defeat and leave the smokers to their filthy habit....oh, and charge them an 'arm and a leg' when they need the services of the health authorities for treatment of their smoking-related diseases.”
