Dragons reject wins Boots contract

A hairdresser whose innovative hairbrush was rejected in the Dragon's Den has landed a lucrative contract with retail giant Boots.

The high street chain will stock the Tangle Teezer at 600 stores from September 1, a year after the five business gurus on the BBC2 show rejected the product.

Shaun Pulfrey, a hairdresser from south London, designed the £9.99 device to smooth knotted hair easily.

As well as the Boots deal, sales have taken off at hair salon chains and on the internet and helped push the 47-year-old's turnover to £800,000, giving him a £200,000 profit. He expects to turn over £1.5 million next year.

Shaun asked the Dragons - James Caan, Duncan Bannatyne, Deborah Meaden, Peter Jones and Theo Paphitis - for £85,000 in return for a 15% stake in his company.

This would have made them around £33,000 this year and an estimated £60,000 the next, taking them into profit in just 24 months.

But Deborah and Peter dismissed the brush quickly, with the others following suit.

Shaun said that despite coming away empty-handed, his appearance on Dragons' Den helped him.

He said: "The whole experience has been instrumental in my success because of the exposure it gave me and my product. But the actual success of the product has been driven by its ability to do what it says on the pack."

The brushes work because their specially-designed teeth flex just the right amount to minimise tugging while smoothing the cuticle.
