The Cold Feet star will play an unlucky children's entertainer called Jessie.
He is to film three episodes for the soap next month, which will be shown later this year.
A Corrie spokesman said on the soap's website: "We are delighted that John is joining the show. John is a fantastic comedy actor and is perfect for the part of Jessie."
And the soap's bosses are hoping that the star might return to the cobbles for a longer stint next year.
The 39-year-old comedy actor, who lives with his wife in Didsbury, Greater Manchester, has also starred in The Fast Show and recently in New Street Law. He is currently starring in the new series of ITV1 drama Kingdom.
Other comedians to have cameo roles in the soap include Peter Kay and Roy Hudd.
