Actor hoping for Twilight success

British actor Robert Pattinson is hoping his performance in upcoming film Twilight, based on the hugely successful US book series, will be a hit with American audiences.

"I kind of knew that some people liked [the books] in the beginning," said the 22-year-old actor, who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the film, out in the UK next year. "Not as much as I realise now. I was trying to play him as a character and I wasn't trying to play him as this fantasy figure. I was trying to play him as realistically as I could, so hopefully that works."

And not only does Robert act in the film, but he also performs a song for its soundtrack.

"Catherine [Hardwicke, the director] had a CD of my stuff and just put it in," said Robert, speaking at the Hollywood Film Festival Awards Gala in Beverly Hills, in which he was given the 'New Hollywood' award. "I just thought it was a joke. It's completely insane. I was like 'how did that happen?'"

Twilight is the first in a series of four books by author Stephanie Meyer about a teenage girl who falls in love with a vampire.
