Fire service strike called off
A STRIKE by firefighters due to take place on Saturday has been called off, according to the Fire Brigades Union.
The planned five-hour strike was to be held in a dispute over pensions.
But the decision not to proceed follows progress in talks between both sides.
The government wants firefighters to work up to 60, but the union claims the age is too old to be fighting fires.
The FBU said it had been presented with a deal similar to that in Scotland, which means firefighters will be able to retire on a full pension between the ages of 55 and 60 if they are genuinely not fit enough and another role cannot be found for them.
