Have your say today over P.O. move
TODAY(Thursday)people of Carmarthen can have their say on the relocation of the town's post office to WHSmith at a public event.
The Royal Ivy Bush Hotel in Spilman Street will host the information session by Post Office Ltd from 4.30pm to around 8.30pm — or until all questions are answered.
Town mayor Doug Rose is urging as many people to attend and show the strength of feeling over the move which he said is mainly negative.
.Post Office bosses have said the intention of the forum is to inform customers of the details of the proposal to move the town branch from King Street to Guildhall Square.
Customers and interested parties are invited to go and hear more about the plan which is expected to see the branch relocate by February.
Town mayor Doug Rose said it is not a fair consultation, adding: "I would urge as many people to attend and make the strength of feeling known in town. But it is a fait accompli, the decision has been made that the branch is relocating. Queues regularly snake around the post office in King Street.
"If the same number of people are queuing in WHSmith they will be blocking the shelves and items for sale surely?"
Boycotting WHSmith is one option Mr Rose suggested people get their point across about how the public feels.
He added: "It's a bad business plan and I am one person that could not shop in WHSmith but the people of town could show WHSmith how they feel about the move by stopping to shop there."
Post Office said the move is part of a major modernisation programme across its network.
Reaction to the proposal has been met with opposition in the town with fears that WHSmith is too small for the seven proposed post office counters at the back of the shop. In addition, there are concerns about what will happen to the building in King Street once it becomes empty. There will be no compulsory redundancies for current staff and will be offered positions at the new branch.
Roger Gale, the Post Office's crown network General Manager, said: "We are committed to keeping a Post Office branch in Carmarthen and to maintaining the same levels of service for our customers.
"We believe the best way for us to do this is to change the way we operate the branch, so if the move goes ahead it will be run by WHSmith High Street Ltd rather than by us directly."
A six-week public started on Monday, October 14.
