Have your say: Why so many authorities?
THERE has been much doom and gloom voiced recently about the proposed local authority budgets and the need to cut staff and prioritise front line services.
Can someone please explain to me why Wales needs the number of local authorities it has currently (22 I believe) with the resulting huge duplicate overhead costs in terms of buildings and staff salaries, especially senior staff salaries. We have four police forces, seven health boards and all these local authorities, why?
Oh, I know why. The current government created what we have now and to do a U-turn would be too embarrassing so there is lots of talk about working together on projects which has the fraction of an impact on cost savings that mergers would bring.
