Have your say: Turn our attention to peace
THANKS to all the MPs who voted down the Government's plans for military action against Syria.
In future no British Government will be able to go to war without consent of parliament.
It will be harder to ignore public opinion at home in return for favours from Washington.
It may even be that the United States, now deprived of British support, will reconsider its plans to add violence to violence in Syria.
Now that the dash for missile strikes has been checked in Britain, there is an opportunity for our government to make a more fundamental U-turn from war games to genuine peacemaking in the Middle East.
For Syria what's needed from us is easy to outline:
An end to the arming and encouragement of rebel militias that prolongs an unwinnable civil war and bloodshed on all sides.
Condemnation of violence and atrocities by both government and rebel forces and redoubled humanitarian aid to refugees in border camps.
Full support for the UN in brokering and monitoring a cease fire.
