PLANS for boat trips on the River Tawe are a step closer as a drive to raise funds for a river cruiser reaches its target.

Swansea Community Boat Trust has been raising funds since 2004 to buy a boat to run trips from Swansea Marina to Morfa Bridge for schools, community groups and the general public.

The charitable trust, which is run by volunteers, has now secured the £80,000 fee needed to buy a 50-seater boat, the Black Prince.

Now the trust is looking to raise a further £5,000 to bring the vessel via road from Leeds, where it is currently located. Trust chairman Charles White said: "The arrival of a community boat in Swansea provides us with a unique opportunity to promote our city, with its wealth of history and heritage, not only to visitors, but to people who live in the locality."

The boat will also undergo minor improvements over the next few months, while volunteers are trained to use the boat.

A target of late spring has been set for the first passenger trips to begin.

“Hate to disillusion you but Labour lost power in Swansea in 2004.”

“This is really earth shattering news. Imagine that, a boat trip all the way from the marina to Morfa bridge I cannot believe that the Labour party of Swansea was so progressive. Of course if it had been really progressive, Morfa bridge (and New cut bridge) would have been high level, and action would have been taken to allow for boat trips, and commercial usage of the river as far as Pontardawe.
Wont it be wonderful for people to see the dereliction, and graveyard, of Swansea¿s heritage which lies rotting on the West bank of the river. This could have been a real living museum; a tourist attraction that could have earned Swansea more money and wealth than the Morris¿s and Vivians and all the other exploiters¿.sorry,(all the other businesses put together).
Still, never mind¿perhaps we will be informed by Wiki Leaks when the river/docks will be connected to the Swansea, and the Neath Tennant canals; this was, after all, one of the big Labour party plans for Swansea!
