DVD review: An Evening with John Barrowman

Wednesday, December 16, 2009, 17:43

FANS of Torchwood star John Barrowman who missed out on his UK tour earlier this year can now get some idea of what they missed.

Filmed on his home turf in Scotland, we see the crowd at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall go mad as John belts out a wealth of classic hits.

The show is fairly minimalist, with a band and four or five dancers joining John on stage, but then if anyone can own a stage, it's him.

Opening with Queen hit Don't Stop Me Now, the uptempo numbers keep on coming. Whether it's Boogie Wonderland, Rhythm of the Night or Livin La Vida Loca, John certainly knows how to get an audience on their feet.

He also belts out some of his own hits, including What About Us and I Made It Through the Rain, which a Chris Moyle's campaign made a surprise chart hit.

John's fans get to enjoy more than just his voice though, as he gives us a great insight into his life and career in entertainment.

In between songs he thrills the audience with tales which are genuinely interesting. Whether it's about his dogs or his family, there's plenty of funny stories he has to tell.

Honouring some great singers with a great sense of humour, John does a great job of maintaining momentum where many would fail.

I didn't know what to expect, having never seen John live. But I found myself enjoying this a lot more than I expected to.

This is probably the perfect present to give your nan this Christmas.

But you could do a lot worse than buying an extra copy to watch yourself!
