The reserve is the problem

KEITH M Ross (Have Your Say, Oct 11) seems to think that the Government's failure to embrace renewable energy has put us in an awkward position where the country will suffer blackouts.

Sorry, Keith, but the reverse is the problem. Investing in these "cock-and-bull" green enterprises and not continuing with fossil fuel/nuclear power stations is the problem. Where George Osborne is watering down green commitments, he should be kicking them into touch! Green energy is heavily subsidised by the Government; because of this our energy costs will rise. Even the minister Charles Hendry has said that we cannot do away with conventional power stations because wind energy is so intermittent. That sums it up for me. Anyone with doubts, please send a self-addressed postcard to nimby@commonsense.com

    “NB234 you say -
"Denmark has a lot more wind power than we have and they are not facing blackouts,"

that's because (according to the Danish government ) they import large amounts of power from Germany, Sweden Norway & Holland & Poland.
Denmark generates 76% of its power from coal & gas & is building more gas powered stations.”

“I believe Denmark embraced windpower because they were a major manufacturer of wind turbines. However I believe that they have now stopped relying on them. I was in Denmark a few years ago looking at the situation there.”

    “Neathboy,
You are talking absolute rubbish, instead of it being an industrial coal tip it will be a useless industrial wind farm tip which will reduce the prices of all the homes making it the poorest part of the EU again.
It has taken years of patience and hard work to make the upper Afan Valley look as stunning as it does today, and it will all be in vain if the proposed development for useless wind energy in this valley gets the go-ahead.
If wind power is so good how come Denmark will only meet 50% of their electricity needs by 2020, surely that should be 100%, or is it Denmark's way of telling us that wind power isn't as good is they say it is.”

“Denmark has a lot more wind power than we have and they are not facing blackouts, and nor will they by 2020 when 50% of their energy will be produced in this way.

Perhaps MR Milsom would like to go back to the days when glyncorrwg and many other parts of Wales was just one big massive coal tip. After all this was the legacy that made Glyncorrwg one of the poorest parts not just of the UK but the entire EU. I for one would not like to see that happen.”
