RECENT correspondence in this column tends to suggest support for the Welsh language is not as strong as some people imply.

I have no problem with the Welsh language, but would make the point that the development of the language has to come from the desire of the people of Wales — you cannot in my opinion force-feed the language on to the population via the use of bilingual correspondence, road signs, etc at great cost to the public purse.

The will of the people of Wales should be the determining factor in the future of the Welsh language, not Welsh Assembly policies or coercement from the Welsh Language Society.

“It is the people of Wales - the parents - that are behind the phenomenal growth in Welsh medium education - not the authorities, who are finding it difficult to keep up with the demand.”

“B Griffiths you say that you have no problem with the Welsh language, yet you go on about it being force-fed to the people of Wales. Which people are those the intolerant ones? this is so ridiculous that it speaks volumes about you and the above persons comments yet again another anglicised welsh man who's a language bigot (One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ). And i agree the people of Wales will be the determining factor in the future of the Welsh language, and from where I'm sitting it looks bright!”
