A TOAST has been made to a former Gwendraeth Valley publican, who has reached the ripe old age of 100.

Known to his friends as "Boyo", Gomer Jones was brought up at the Union Tavern in Gorslas — which was demolished a few years ago.

He married in 1946 and took on the tenancy of the Farmers Arms, in Cross Hands, where the family lived for 17 years. To mark the special occasion, Mr Jones received a visit from Carmarthenshire councillor Sian Thomas.

His son, Percy Jones, senior principal officer with the social care and housing department until his retirement 10 years ago, said his dad enjoyed the visit.

Mr Jones added: "Dad loves chatting about people he knew in the Gorslas and Penygroes area. We thought he would have become tired during the day but he was still smiling and enjoying every minute of his 100th birthday well into the early evening."

Mrs Thomas added: "It was lovely to have the chance to wish Mr Jones a happy birthday and to have a chat about the local area."
