£1.5m cash boost to fund science expansion at school
A LLANELLI secondary school is set to receive a £1.5 million funding boost from the Welsh Government.
Ysgol y Strade has been awarded the cash boost as part of a £15 million funding scheme across the country.
The windfall has been welcomed by Education and Skills Minister Leighton Andrews as it will allow a number of projects in the government's 21st Century Schools programme, originally planned for next year, to start ahead of schedule.
A list of 10 projects across Wales are set to receive funding, subject to the completion of business cases and statutory approvals, where necessary.

As well as the £1.5 million for Strade, the list also includes £1 million for a new school for 3 to 19-year-olds in Llandysul, Ceredigion.
Carmarthenshire Council confirmed yesterday the money going to Strade would help fund plans to build a new extension housing science and design technology at the school.
The county's school modernisation manager, Simon Davies, said: "We are delighted with the news that we are receiving this funding for phase one works at Ysgol Y Strade.
"We will now prepare a business case for approval by the Welsh Government, following which we hope to be on site during the summer of 2013."
The project — which is expected to cost £8.2 million in total — will also see remodelling work at the bilingual school to help address problems with the provision of Welsh-medium secondary education in the Llanelli area.
Welcoming the additional investment, Mr Andrews said: "This £15 million boost underlines our commitment to the 21st Century Schools programme.
"Securing capital investment in these difficult economic times is essential, not only for our schools and communities, but for the continued support of our construction industry and the growth of our economy."
He said the Government would now be working closing with local authorities to ensure construction work on the projects would be able to commence as soon as possible.
