Police say the vehicle made off towards the Ynysforgan roundabout.
It happened at around 2.05pm on Sunday and officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Detective Sergeant Carl Morris of Neath CID said: "This elderly lady was left unhurt but extremely shaken following the incident.
"This attack has happened in broad daylight on a very busy road, and at a time when there could very well have been a large number of vehicles in the vicinity.
"The actions of this lady, in which she smashed the vehicle with her walking stick to try and stop it driving away, were very courageous."
The suspect is a white man, aged around 30 and of medium build. He was wearing an off-white or cream coloured top.
He was driving a white hatchback, which may have damage to the driver's side door or wing mirror following the incident.
Sergeant Morris added: "I am appealing top anyone who witnessed the incident or has any relevant information to come forward."

“Knowing the law these days if the Lady had broken his teeth she probably would have been arrested and forced to pay compensation to the scum bag.”
