Webb keen to set big fight standard
Webb faces Poland's Pawel Trebinski in the opening fight of Sport Network's latest card at the Echo Arena — a bill topped by Smith's clash with fellow Scouser Tony Quigley.
But the Swansea super-middleweight has no qualms about being the opening act.
"I love going on first," said Webb, who takes in his third professional fight. "It means that I can set the standard for the night and show the rest of the boxers what I am capable of.
Experience
"Sometimes the first fights can be quite slow, but that's not going to be the case with mine.
"I am ready to box intelligently, unload some great shots and get some rounds in the bank — it is vital experience for me.
"I am not going to go all-out attack — that would be stupid of me — but it will be an exciting fight for the crowd."
The 21-year-old, who made his pro debut at the MEN Arena in March, was due to weigh-in this afternoon after his original opponent, Hamed Jamali, withdrew from the fight yesterday.
That meant Webb was left to find a late replacement. But Trebinski, who has lost four of his seven fights, took up the fight with 48 hours' notice.
Webb, however, remains undisturbed by the late distractions.
"It is a little annoying — particularly as I've been looking forward to a good meal after the weigh-in — but you can't let these things get to you.
"I've been training so hard for this fight that it would be foolish to let something like that disrupt my focus.
"I am a boxer learning his trade and I have to pick up small things along the way in each fight.
"Nothing will take my mind off it because I am determined to succeed."
Webb will be an interested spectator in the main fight of the night.
British super-middleweight king Smith defends his title against Quigley, and Webb reckons the belt will change hands.
"It will be a good fight, but I think Quigley has too much raw strength and I can see him knocking Smith out," added Webb.
"These guys aren't on my radar yet — there's a while to go yet — but I am making progress at the right pace."
Webb's corner will have a familiar feel to it. Besides trainer Karl Ince, Webb will have his two uncles — Valo and Enzo Maccarinelli — to call upon while his grandfather, Mario Maccarinelli, will also be on hand for advice.
