Weather can't rain on town's parade

Monday, August 18, 2008, 09:00

WORLD music pioneers Trans-global Underground drew the curtain on Pontardawe Arts Festival, which celebrated its 30th anniversary.

The band were among 100-plus performers who entertained the crowds over three rainy days.

Organisers have thanked the many people who ignored the foul weather and pitched-up at the weekend.

"The campsite was full, and I can still see a few bedraggled tents from my window," said chairman of the festival organising committee David Hammond-Williams yesterday.

"It was fantastic, the atmosphere was really good, and more people came than we expected."

He added: "It was possibly the best music ever, and we are starting to plan for next year."

Headliners on Friday night were Dublin-based group Kila, with Berroguetto, from the north-west of Spain, taking over on Saturday.

George Whitfield, who played with his band Pressgang on the new music stage, said the sodden weather did impact on numbers, but added: "The people who were there were really up for it."

The festival also hosted a traditional jumping the broom wedding ceremony on Saturday, craft stalls from around the world, and the ever-popular festival parade.

Unfortunately, the rain really started to lash down minutes before the parade, said organiser Jo Bailey.

"I would like to say a big thank-you to the crowds that did turn up," she said. "I'm glad the community got involved."

She admitted the parade looked smaller than usual because the dance groups huddled up to prevent their costumes from getting ruined.

"It was the weather that prevented them from spreading out and dancing," she said.

The nine dance groups were Batatan Samba, Design Dance Hip-Hop Academy, Tipyn o Bopeth, Panic Circus, Men of Sweyns Ey, Y Tylwyth Teg, Baubo Belly Dancers, Flamenco De Galles and Vagrants Crew.
