Wanted burglar taunts cops with picture of him by a police van

ONE of the suspects whose photos were distributed by police has taunted them — by sending the Evening Post a new photo of him standing NEXT to a POLICE VAN,

Police want to talk to Matthew Maynard about a burglary at Brynsifi Terrace, Mount Pleasant, back in September. They issued a mugshot of him, along with seven other suspects as part of a major swoop which saw more than 80 arrests in 48 hours, in the hope Post readers could provide information on his whereabouts.

Four of those pictured were picked up by officers, but four remain at large.

Twenty-three-year-old Maynard responded with his own photo that he sent into the Evening Post from his mobile.

Police have declined to comment on the provocative snapshot, but say the drive to catch crooks is getting results.

A major police operation on Tuesday and Wednesday saw 81 people arrested across the county for crimes including robbery, burglary, assault, possession of drugs, fraud, and sexual offences.

Acting Chief Inspector Nigel Whitehouse, who led the operation, said: "This has been a highly successful operation within the Swansea area, and has had a positive impact in the communities where people live, visit and work.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Swansea for the information they have provided, which, without any doubt, was instrumental in enabling us to effect a high number of arrests."

He added: "I would urge anyone with information on crime to come forward, no matter how trivial they think it is."
