'Rapturous reception' for Welsh Olympic medallists

Sunday, August 24, 2008, 09:00

A HEROES' welcome awaits Wales's Olympic athletes when they arrive home tomorrow.

The successful team will parade in an open-top bus when they arrive at The Senedd in Cardiff Bay to be greeted by First Minister Rhodri Morgan.

Mr Morgan has urged the public to give a "rapturous reception" to the team when they arrive at noon.

Welsh athletes helped Team GB to the largest Olympic medal haul for more than a century.

The Cardiff Bay reception will feature Welsh gold medallists cyclists Nicole Cooke and Geraint Thomas, along with rower Tom James and David Davies, who won silver in the gruelling 10km open water swimming race.

Large crowds are expected at the event, so people are advised to arrive by 11.30am to make sure they get a good view of the sports stars.

Mr Morgan said: "They have made us proud through their inspiring and courageous achievements in Beijing.

"Now it is our turn to show our appreciation."
