Private measles clinic axed

Thursday, May 28, 2009, 10:30

A PRIVATE clinic that is offering a single jab against measles in Llanelli has been cancelled after failing to be awarded a licence.

Desumo chiefs are instead offering to take 50 youngsters to a Worcestershire clinic by coach.

The company behind the clinic say they want to offer mums and dads a choice, although MMR is said to be the best protection by health chiefs.

Debbie Ryding, from Desumo, said: "We wouldn't exist if there wasn't a demand for it."

Measles cases in Swansea alone have doubled from 17 to 34, while in Neath Port Talbot there are now 24 confirmed cases, a jump from 15.

And in Carmarthenshire, the number of cases has risen to 68.
