A FORMER Evening Post columnist has won a prestigious award recognising her as a role model for women.

Jenny Gristock has been named a Woman of Outstanding Achievement by the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (UKRC).

The awards are designed to profile pioneering women in science, engineering and technology as role models in a sector in which females are under-represented.

The former Bishop Gore Comprehensive School pupil, who hails from Newton, was chosen for the prize for her science communication activities and their contribution to society.

She currently works as a researcher at the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for the Natural Sciences and Humanities at SISSA, in Trieste, Italy,

She said: "I think the judges were particularly impressed with the science column that ran in the South Wales Evening Post for 12 years and my work in Trieste, Italy, where I am researching the social implications of the latest developments in neuroscience."

Dr Gristock is one of six winners of the awards to be celebrated at an event in London in March.

The event includes the unveiling of a photographic exhibition of the six winners, before they find a permanent home in a scientific institution.

She added: "My Swansea engineering tutor, Brian Wilshire, along with my dad, were big influences in my choice of science as a career."
