Killer James Stevenson who was on the run for two weeks 'is in hospital'
James Stevenson had been expected in court yesterday to face charges of absconding.
However, he did not appear before magistrates, and it is understood the 29-year-old is currently under police guard in hospital.
His condition is not known. Police would not confirm where he was being held, but said he remained in custody.
Stevenson escaped from the Guildhall court complex on October 2, just minutes after being sentenced to five years in jail for possessing a shotgun.
It is thought he fled through a window while security company Reliance were waiting to transport him to prison.
Despite a major police manhunt — and the offer of a £5,000 reward for information — he remained on the run until Sunday night.
It is believed he had handed himself in.
A police spokesman said: "A 29-year-old man arrested in connection with the escape from custody at Swansea Courts on Friday, October 2, remains in police custody.''
The National Offender Management Service is conducting an investigation into how Stevenson, from Matthew Street, Dyfatty, was able to escape from custody at the court building.
The October 2 incident was not the first time Stevenson had fled from custody — in 2005 he broke out of a Dorset prison where he was being held for the manslaughter of Gorseinon man Paul Mainwaring.
He killed the 46-year-old epileptic at a flat in Beech Crescent in 2002 by sticking newspaper in his mouth and taping over it. Mr Mainwaring's body was later dumped in the River Tawe.
