Jobs boost after U-turn at former MoD site

HUNDREDS of jobs could be on the way to Llanelli after a surprise deal was sealed.

The former Ministry of Defence depot — known as RN — in Llangennech has been bought by Carmarthenshire Council.

It comes after the centre — one half of Llangennech's defence storage and distribution centre — shut down in March last year, ending 19 months of campaigning and lobbying to save it.

There were 190 job losses as a result of the closure — a decision made by the MoD's Defence Storage and Distribution Agency (DSDA).

But, in a surprise turn of events, the Morwg Road depot has already attracted a private investor pledging to bring up to 400 jobs to the town.

Carmarthenshire Council chief executive Mark James said: "This is exciting and good news with the welcome potential of a substantial jobs boost for the town."
