DVD review: Michael Sheen – You're The Boss

Michael Sheen.
Michael Sheen.

MICHAEL Sheen had critics raving earlier this year when he was seen portraying iconic footie boss Brian Clough in The Damned United.

And he has almost returned to the role for this new DVD, which sees him narrate through an hour-long presentation of old footage of the beautiful game.

The Port Talbot actor sits with a mock manager's office as a backdrop as he guides us through the years, regularly slipping into an impression of Clough.

He reminds us that he spent a year getting into the mindset of the sporting icon, which more than earns his position as presenter for this DVD.

Through old footage we are given an in-depth look into the life of managers. Revie, Ferguson, Wenger and, of course, Clough are all put under the microscope.

And key events in footballing history are also covered, including the Euro 1996 defeat by Germany.

reminiscing through the years. Euro 1996 when we lost to Germany.

Knowing that Sheen is a big football fan in real life gives this DVD a much needed gravitas and explains why a Bafta-winning actor has chosen a seemingly odd choice for a job.

He is excellent as a narrator, which is impressive given he doesn't have any notable experience as a presenter. Is there anything this man can't do? His sense of humour even shines through.

This DVD is a bit like one of those countdown shows you find on digital channels, simply going over a lot of stuff the viewer already knows. But for fans of football, it's highly likely that this will still entertaining. And having Michael Sheen presenting is a welcome bonus.
