THERE'S a lot more to the proposed new Afan Lido than just the size of the swimming pool.

As well as the eight-lane, 25-metre pool with 100-seat spectator gallery, the recommendations call for a four-court sports hall with retractable seating for 100 spectators.

The group says that, should the money become available, the hall should be increased to six courts.

There would also be a 100-station fitness suite, combined dance studio and dojo room, changing facilities, a youth club, community rooms, indoor soft play area for children and a café.

Controversial plans to move Sandfields Library from Morrison Road to the new Lido are not now being recommended.

The group is proposing to close Seaway Parade Education Centre and have alternative provision in the new complex.

Dalton Road Community Centre is already the subject of a community asset transfer to New Sandfields Aberavon, and cabinet will be asked to approve a transfer in the case of the Aberavon Community Centre, in Michna Street.

Further work to make the Lido as accessible as possible to all is also recommended.

Aberavon MP Hywel Francis said: "I congratulate the task and finish group and the whole council on its clear recommendations for the rebuilding of the Afan Lido.

"I welcome the report and look forward to an early start to the construction works."

Aberavon AM David Rees added: "What must be important to the people of Port Talbot is the ability to access the best facilities available and recommendations from the report give a clear indication that they will be able to do this in the future.

"I look forward to the development of a modern, fit for purpose swimming pool along with a variety of dry side facilities which will provide a resource for the town to be proud of."
