System needs overhauling
A MAIN contribution to the flooding at Underhill Park (Post, Feb 19) must be laid at the desks of Swansea Council's planning department and Welsh Water.
Mumbles is served by a Victorian drainage system, and since this was installed many hundreds of houses and multi-storey flats have been built in Newton, Caswell, Langland and Oystermouth.
Since the drainage system was installed the planning department and Welsh Water have never made any objections on the overload to the system. The building of the residential premises has meant the natural drainage has resulted in an over-burden on an outdated drainage system. Beside flooding in Underhill Park, many roads flood every time it rains, this causes an inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists. Mumbles needs a 21st century drainage system — you cannot continue to pour a gallon into a pint pot.
