'We need 10,000 extra seats at Liberty'
HUW Jenkins has revealed the club has had "preliminary talks" with Swansea Council about expanding three of the stands at the Liberty Stadium.
The Swans chairman has spoken publicly about proposals to create a 30,000-seater stadium which he reiterated could be jeopardised by a new McDonald's drive- through restaurant.

The restaurant site is between the South Stand and Brunel Way.
"The club has already started preliminary talks with planning officers in order to submit a scheme for approval in the near future," said Mr Jenkins. "The overall expansion plans include the East, South and North stands to increase capacity up to around 30,000.
"We should have even been considering including a hotel development into the South Stand expansion to complement not only football and rugby fixtures, but to help promote the Liberty Stadium as a top venue for concerts, conferences and other events that will bring business into the city. This could have included extra car parking and improved access surrounding the area the council has now recommended as a McDonald's outlet," he said.
"Unfortunately, if the fast food outlet goes ahead, we will have to look again to see if the expansion is financially viable.
"The stadium expansion, which is to be built with a phased approach, is an extremely expensive project which will be funded by Swansea City Football Club."
The planning report put before councillors did not mention any stadium expansion proposal but outlined objections by the Liberty Stadium Management Company on other grounds.
Supporters of the McDonald's outlet have welcomed the creation of 75 new jobs for the area.
Outline planning permission for two restaurants at the site had previously been granted.
Swansea City Supporters' Trust chairman Phil Sumbler felt the McDonald's approval was a mistake.
He said: "Demand to see the Swans play at the Liberty is clearly outstripping supply and we fully support the club's desire to expand the stadium at the appropriate time."
A council spokesman said the stadium discussions were at a very early stage and that the Swans were advised of the detailed steps they needed to take to progress their ideas.
He added that the club had not objected to the McDonald's application.

“Swansea City Kicked North End FC, Landore FC and Landore Cricket Club off thier home pitch because they wanted to set up an academy about 2 and a half years ago, the council bent over backwards to help them then and Swansea City FC didnt give a toss about anyone other than themselves back then. A request to ground share on a minimal basis was flatly refused.
The area by the way, has been left barren since - a complete waste that the local sports teams could have enjoyed using in the mean time at least.
What a shame that they are having a taste of thier own medicine now - going from bullying smaller teams by ignoring thier objections and pushing them out of thier homes to getting ignored in thier own objections to permission to build a restaurant near to them. Now they are bleating in the press for support.
Life is a big circle.”

“Crickhowell, I am sorry but your comment is utter nonsense.
If there is no serious plan or intent to expand then there would be no opposition to the McDonald's. Why would HJ have any reason to oppose it?
The fact is that Swansea City have earned a lot of money from Premier League football and it is looking likely that we will be getting at least a second season out of it as well. With attendances maxxed out and a health bank balance the club does have money to fund this and would be keen to reap the benefits.
At this stage it is all theoretical because we needed to have a good indication of staying up to move forward with any expansion ideas. Realistically we would be looking to do the work during the summer of 2013 at the earliest I would think and I don't see why most of it couldn't be done during the summer months, possibly a section at a time over several years.”

“Here we go again, a handful of contributors simply using this medium to try and out do each other. Why not discuss the story, what is being proposed. The fact of the matter is that Swansea City FC, much as they#d love to, are highly unlikely to finance such a major project. Apart from the sheer cost of this sort of development there's the massive disruption that will be caused to the games for a long long time whilst it was being done. This is just a case of smoke and mirrors by the Chairman in an attempt to get the council to overturn the planning decision. Having said that, it is kind of madness to allow it to go through when you consider how many other fast food outlets are on site.”

“Glad you remember me Jager, I never got on with the new versions so this is it for me now.
Regarding parking, yes the parking situation is dire. A relatively small investment in a multi-storey accross the road on the park and ride site that can service both that and the ground would be the ideal solution. I'd happily pay an extra £2 of so on my ticket price to park there.”

“We must look to the long time
development of our city. An extension of the Liberty Stadium is essential to this development.
At present Swansea City Football Club have an excellent manager and team who are are a credit to grace the premier league. We now have a mavellous opportunity to expand, the one great asset that has happend in Swansea for many a year.
Act now and develop the Liberty to a greater crowd capacity. Make the Liberty a Stadium the envy of Wales, a ground that will be, the future for all young football and rugby, players and supporters, for many generations. Who are these short sighted councillors who sit on planning committies, what qualifications and experience do they have, to sit in judgement into development within our city boundaries?.”

“When taking into consideration the cosy of more seats please take into consideration more space for car parking as we residents in Landore , Plasmarl and the Hafod are already having problems with all the extra parking issues before you sell extra seats to more fans”

“What are they going to do with all those extra seats when the club is back in Division Two in a few years?”
