A little bit of Estonia in Ponty - folk with Gwyn Jones
ON Friday, September 20, local duo SILD are the guests at the Valley Folk Club, Ivy Bush Hotel, Pontardawe starting at 8pm. Martin Leamon and Sille Ilves formed their unique Welsh – Estonian collaboration shortly after the 2001 Viljandi Folkmusic Festival. Indeed their name - Sild is the Estonian word for bridge and, since meeting and forming this collaboration, they have developed an original fusion of two different musical cultures, rooted in tradition yet thoroughly modern.
Sille is one of the finest fiddle players in her native Estonia and her adopted home of Wales. She is also the leading exponent of the Hiiu-kannel (bowed harp) and singer. In this duo the contribution of the guitar playing of Martin perfectly combines with and enhances their sound, these two talented musicians bringing out the best in each other.
They have recorded and played at numerous venues and been part of many other musical collaborations, performing and recording with many leading Welsh traditional musicians. Their albums have been released to critical acclaim and live performances have consistently created intimate, emotive performances.
On Wednesday, September 25th, at the Llantrisant Folk Club, The Windsor Hotel Pontyclun, Roy Harris returns with his postponed 80th Birthday Party replacing the New York duo Jerry Epstein & Ralph Bodington – whose tour has unfortunately been postponed.
A resident of Ely, Cardiff, Roy has been described as a traditional song crafter and maker who will give you plenty of chances to join in with well-loved and familiar chorus songs in his repertoire.
