IN your report on the closure of our Alberto Culver factory in Swansea (September 28), it is suggested that workers are "all losing [their] jobs to another country". This is incorrect.

We took the difficult decision to close our Swansea site as a result of our plans to invest £40 million in Port Sunlight, the Wirral. The new factory will manufacture personal care products like shampoo and shower gel, with production of these items transferring from Swansea.

These items account for around three-quarters of production in Swansea.

It is only the remaining portfolio of smaller, low volume items like hair-styling products that will be absorbed by our specialist facility in Poland.

The large majority of newly created jobs will be here in the UK — up to 150 in Port Sunlight, and around 50 in a distribution centre in Deeside, compared to around 50 in Poland.

Furthermore, 80 per cent of what Unilever sells in the UK is made in our UK factories — and our investment in Port Sunlight will maintain that figure.

This decision has been taken because we need to ensure our competitiveness in the long term.

We recognise that it represents very difficult news for those affected and we are committed to treating our people fairly.

That is why we are consulting our workers on a significant package of support, including enhanced redundancy terms and outplacement support and training.

“There were two pieces in the EP (Sept 28) about the Alberto Culver factory closure.

I would like Mr. Munden to point out where it is suggested that all of the jobs were going to Poland.
Did the print copy of the newspaper differ from the on-line version?”
