OLDER People's Commissioner for Wales Sarah Rochira has said there is no real evidence of improvement in the care of elderly patients following a hard-hitting report.

But she also found in her first monitoring report since the publication of 'Dignity Care? Review of older people's experiences in hospital', that both NHS chiefs and the Welsh Government were taking the issue more seriously.

Ms Rochira said they were now focused on trying to uncover evidence as to whether changes were being made at ward level in terms of care for elderly patients.

She said: "My report shows that dignity in care is now being taken more seriously than ever before by the NHS and Welsh Government, and I am now satisfied that all the bodies reviewed have significant work underway against their agreed detailed action plans.

"What I will now be focussing on over the next 18 months, as Commissioner, is obtaining clear evidence from the NHS and Welsh Government of real improvements."
