What about immigrants?
IN his latest rambling opposition to the funding of the Welsh language K. Clements (Have Your Say 16th February) makes a statement which really should be challenged.
To quote his letter: "There is not one person within the boundaries of Wales that cannot speak, read or understand English."
Unless K Clements is housebound he must be aware of the large number of immigrants in Swansea, in Wales and throughout the UK.
Many of these people cannot speak English and for very many children of immigrant families English is their second language; at home they speak their native tongue.
As a result education authorities provide English language classes for adults and extra resources are needed in schools to support immigrant children to master the English language.
Perhaps K Clements can tell us the costs incurred in supporting the English language in Wales and how it compares with the cost of supporting the Welsh language. Does he support this justifiable expense in helping immigrant families or is his antipathy only directed at Cymraeg?
