We are all human beings!
MY, my, my — what a to do on the travellers' sites in Swansea.
Now the Gorseinon Chamber of Trade adds their two penny worth of comment (Post, December 29).
-

What no-one appears to grasp, is the fact that we are all human beings, and we are born with rights, laws are made to protect our rights (I dislike using the word ethnic) as it is used to discriminate.
We celebrate Christmas as Christians, so where is that spirit? We Welsh are known throughout the world for our hospitality to all. Family life, especially in our valleys, brought us up to value everyone's right to live where they chose. We all move to where we want to go, so why the furore when other people wish to do the same?

Go and speak to them, you will find that over the years travellers went to find work, meet others, and many married, their families settling in Swansea.
Hopkins, Harris, O'Neils, Leyshon, are some of the names told to me by one traveller as family members living in the Swansea area. Is it possible that many who now oppose the rights of children to be educated, whose only crime is to be with parents exercising their rights to live a healthy lifestyle as they wish, are now family members of the ones they incite hatred against? Gorseinon Chamber of Trade fear for the safety of schoolchildren, also residents in sheltered accommodation and the protection of their own small businesses, against travellers.
Where else have they to go, for their children to have the education demanded by law, or shop for food, and clothes?
Read the laws before you decide to use racism, the Court of Human Rights could be the one thing overlooked when meetings are arranged, to demand our councils pander to the whims of the few.

Gypsy Blood: True Stories
Documentary following two Traveller families and their bare-knuckle fighting traditions, revealing the violence that can erupt as they battle for respect in their communities. Romany gypsy Fred Butcher nearly dies in a machete attack when a day of drinking and sparring goes horribly wrong. Plus, seven-year-old Francie Doherty is caught between learning to read and write at school, and being taught to fight with his fists at home”

“And the travellers side of the bargain is what ?
Stop burning cables - stop using anywhere within 100 yards as a toilet - keep all animals secure - stop leaving rubbish on the site for others to clean up - tax and insure their vehicles - etc etc”

“A little bit more info for you jiffy, here is what equalities minister, Jane Hutt had to say.
"We want to change the law in Wales to make sure that Gypsies and travellers are protected from unfair eviction from their homes," said the minister.
Human rights
"We plan to make councils fully explain to the court why they think a Gypsy or Traveller should be evicted from one of their sites. If the court disagrees, the family won't be evicted."
Under the proposals, the government said Gypsies and travellers would also see changes to the agreements for pitches on council sites, setting out how pitch fees are handled, how pitches can change hands, and introducing new rules for resolving disputes.
"By strengthening the rights of Gypsies and travellers we can make sure that Gypsies' and travellers' human rights are protected and that they are not unfairly evicted," added the minister.
"We are also making sure that councils are able to manage sites well, so that everyone who lives on these sites is treated fairly."”

“Some are just less humans than others, well in some peoples eyes anyway. In my eyes we're all brothers and sisters”
