A higher part to play as A-list star goes from Jesus to God
HE famously played Jesus in an outdoor production of the Passion.
Now Hollywood star Michael Sheen has gone on to higher things..
The Frost/Nixon actor has taken time to add his voice to an amateur dramatic production of Godspell, which will be held at St Catherine's Church in Gorseinon next month.
And somewhat appropriately, the star won't be there in person but in spirt as he has kindly agreed to record the opening lines of the musical, which are delivered by God himself.
Director Keith Milward said: "I was looking at the script and thought wouldn't it be great to have someone to do the speech and the idea of Michael Sheen came to me.
"He was in the Passion not so long ago but it would have to be a fluke as to how far I would get with it.
"Anyway I know his father, Meyrick, from amateur dramatics in Port Talbot and I had a conversation with him about it.
"He put me in touch with his office and Michael kindly agreed to do it.
"We are all absolutely delighted, he has given us a real boost."
As well as appearing in hit films such as the Damned United and Frost/Nixon, Michael made a stunning return to South West Wales when he performed the Passion at Easter two years ago.
Godspell will be held at St Catherine's Church, which is also celebrating its 100th anniversary, from October 3 to 5.
And the Moon and the Stars production is also doing it its bit to promote equality as well as the musical features able-bodied and disabled performers.
"We are a new group, a small local one, and the fact Michael has taken the time out to do this for us is splendid," Mr Milward said. "He doesn't forget his roots."
