Port Talbot's Michael Sheen performs to thousands over the Easter weekend
THE image of a figure emerging from the waters of Aberavon Beach marked the beginning of a three-day spectacle starring the local boy who became a Hollywood superstar.
More than 1,000 people turned out yesterday as The Passion featuring Michael Sheen got under way at a number of venues across Port Talbot.
The thrilling event, which will feature Manic Street Preachers among other well-known names, officially began yesterday afternoon with The Arrival at Aberavon Beach.
The open-air theatre project features Sheen taking on the role of a Christ-like in his darkest hour. It tells the tale of the most famous trial, betrayal and execution in history and it is likely to be remembered as the biggest arts and community event in South Wales for years to come.
Among those who turned out to see the event was Steve Hillan, from Mariners Point.
He said: "It is great to see such a crowd here, it is what Aberavon used to be like years ago. Michael Sheen is great he always talks up the town."
Janet Griffiths from Pentwyn Baglan Road said: "I'm impressed with the way it has brought the community together. Michael Sheen is such a great ambassador for the town."
The event continues today with a number of events at midday in the town which will be followed with much-anticipated The Supper at the Seaside Social and Labour Club tonight.
It will then conclude tomorrow with The Trial, The Procession and finally The Cross in the evening which will take place at Aberavon Seafront roundabout. Speaking ahead of the event, Sheen said he would only be able to fully enjoy it when it came to a close.
At the Laugharne Festival, he said: "Two years ago it seemed a good idea — for me it's going to be one of those things I am going to enjoy in retrospect."

“I feel sorry for those people with closed minds. Michael Sheen is an amazing actor and a very genuine and sincere man. This Passion play he has staged has been amazing and set in modern times must have made people think. If the staging of this play has made more people realise that Easter is not about chocolate eggs and something far more, then it will all have been worth it. Just by bringing the community together for such a great project has been amazing.”

“For those who have deep religious beliefs and those who have taken part in Passion Plays of by gone years - with respect, this was never going to be a religious re-enactment but a story for the masses and played in a modern theme so that many people can relate to it. It worked and many will remember these last three days for the mass involvement, the spectacle of seeing close up a Hollywood grade Actor and seeing the involvement of the local community. So what if it was not religiously correct or performed in the way that it used to be in Margam Park in the 1970's. Michael Sheen needs to be congratulated for what he's done for Port Talbot - lets hope that some who attended will be motivated to do something - anything, for those who live in Port Talbot, you know that nothing really happens here. We have a beautiful seafront however the facilities behind the beautiful beach, such as the burnt out Afan Lido, the boarded up and graffiti covered Burger Drive thru the boarded up ex Chinese Restaurant and the new building that was built four years ago and was to be a 10 pin bowling ally facility and is now being vandalised - makes the overall seafront experience like as if a tsunami has hit these buildings (apologies I do not wish to offend anyone effected by the Japanese tsunami). With several summers now where these facilities have been closed and gradually being run down - can someone in the NPT Council take some action on these buildings - either clear them away or protect them until new tenants can take them over.”

“I fail to see how this can be seen not to be a retelling of the Passion but only a drama. All the symbolism is there. I am proud to be one of the cast from "Behold The Man", the production held successfully at Margam Park for many years. Many people who turned up to watch this weekend are not suddenly going to realise the significance of Christ's Passion neither are they going to want to know more. They turned up to see a Hollywood actor, and a very fine one at that.
The fact that people from a community church are branded as "typical morons" just because they have an opposing view enhances my point. Port Talbot's "profile" will have been raised for this weekend, but in the long-term? A return to ignorance I suspect.”

“Having just witnessed a spectacle of almost biblical significance (no pun intended) Michael Sheen should be congratulated. I should imagine that many churches including the catholic churches in PT have their views on what took place over the last three days. However what Michael Sheen has done to enthuse and get local PT residents to take part in this three day event is nothing short of a miracle. Tonight the procession along Victoria Road and P. Margaret Way and the local involvement saw tens of thousands of residents and actors make their way to the crucifixion location near Aberavon Beach it was on Hollywood highest epic scale. You could imagine yourself being at an event in past history when someone was making their way to a Crucifixion - hundreds/thousands lining the streets. There was entertainment along the whole route rock bands, marching bands, drums bands - the whole atmosphere was magical and with the setting Sun al the more dramatic. To those who were not there - you missed something special very special and God ensured that the weather was good enough to hold the three day event. Congratulations to ALL involved in this special three day event, the planning down to the information letter drops, to the staged scenery, to the hundreds of local residents that over the last two months practiced and practiced - well done. Michael has achieved a spectacular event here in Port Talbot and something he can be very proud of. When you have the likes of beautiful Katherine Jenkins singing to thousands from the balcony of a local seafront restaurant - you know something special is taking place. Thanks everyone.”

“i totally agree with passion fan. Micheal Sheen and the passion is the best thing to happen to the town in years. Derek it is not meant to be a retelling of Christs passion but a drama and therefore not beliitling the story from the bible. The people of the town have welcomed Micheal and th passion wholeheartedly. thank god not all christians are as small minded as you..”

“Nice support Derek typical morons from a community church they area the community and no one else matters. Thousands watching the passion and a handful of bigots in your church for Easter.
Michael Sheen has done more for PT's profile than anyone else in recent years it's even on the big USA media outlets.

“As a member of Baglan Community Church i am so pleased that our pastor Neil Tallamy declined for our church to be part of this.It was a mockery of my Christian beliefs and bears no resemblence to the real passion of Christs crucifixion at Calvary in which Jesus died to save the world from its sins.”

“Given the lack of any news for the Evening Post, I'm surprised at the minimal coverage the Evening Post has on this 3 day epic that has thousands involved and thousands following it - oh almost forgot - it's not happening in Swansea so doesn't matter - silly me! Come on Evening Post - Cat stuck up a tree gets more publicity in your rag of a paper.”
