III Griffiths Memorial Lecture and Film Showing of 1960's Classic Arabic Film, 'The Night of Counting the Years.' at the Tailesin 7pm Saturday 9th June.
Al Mummia or The Night of Counting the Years (1969) is director and screenwriter Shadi Abdel Salam's reinterpretation of the events surrounding the celebrated 1881 discovery of a royal mummy cache at Deir el-Bahri. With dreamlike ambience, Abdel Salam explores themes of identity and cultural – national and personal - by pitting modernity and science against tradition and belief in a landscape where past and present appear to have co-existed for millennia, creating a masterpiece of Egyptian cinema, acknowledged by critics and filmmakers alike.
This screening will be preceded by an introductory lecture by the Egyptologist John J. Johnston (UCL, London), a specialist on Egypt in the cinema.
