AN EDWARDIAN MAID is a unique short performance by Debra John, when she will re-enact Daily life as an Upper Housemaid at Ostreme Centre, Newton Road, Mumbles, on Thursday 21st February 2013 at 7.40 pm.
The presentation, entitled AN EDWARDIAN MAID is based on servants' diaries and memoirs, in which she plays an upper housemaid. The housemaid takes her audience through the duties expected of them as servants in a large household. Debra John said 'She is not shy of repeating stories she's overheard about employers and servants at large houses around the country either.'
She continued, 'I've chosen to depict a housemaid in particular, as opposed to any other servants, as it is a position that is almost invisible to history. There are very few first-hand accounts left to us by the housemaids themselves, and so this is a way of giving them a voice and recognising the hard work that they did. I enjoy the research, especially as it gives me a glimpse into the lives of my own ancestors, but it was a tough life and not a job I would have relished doing. For those women, however, there was usually no real alternative.'
Entry for guests and visitors is two pounds.
Entry is free for members of Oystermouth Historical Association.
