Local historian, Carol Powell is signing copies of her latest book entitled 'REGENCY MUMBLES, Nine Years of Village Life', at Cover to Cover, 58, Newton Road, Mumbles between 12 noon and 1pm on Saturday 8th September.
The Regency era, lasting from February 1811 until January 1820, has cast an enduring impression on our perception of life at that time, as being one of ostentation and decadence.
This is the story of the Mumbles area during those years as it seeks to recreate the sights, smells and sounds known to the people, ancestors to some of us, living here then. It is an exploration of the place, its people and their occupations.
There are sections on who they were, where they lived, their rites of passage, the workings of the Parish Church and the treatment of the poor; the growth of nonconformity and education; language, dress, diet, medicine, leisure, pubs and working environment, including the militia.
