THE conclusion of the Welsh Government investigation into public funding of Awema is damning.

"...it cannot provide any assurance that there are appropriate arrangements in place to safeguard and make proper use of ... funds entrusted to Awema".

Those few words blow away the smokescreen that some at the charity had attempted to create since allegations about its management emerged in December.

The decision to terminate its funding immediately was inevitable and correct. As the report says, there are significant and fundamental failures in the way this charity operates.

It is unlikely that those failures have happened only recently. So we welcome the news that there will be an independent review of past funding.

If there is a scandal, those responsible must be exposed.

“"All of us who continue to serve on the Board at AWEMA – myself as Chair, continuing trustees and CEO will carry out our responsibility to manage an orderly exit...."

This is part of a quote from Rita Austin the current Chairs statement on the AWEMA website. Orderly exit! Do we think that they are hoping this can be swept under the carpet although I am sure WAG are hoping this is the case.
I am sure most of the concerned followers of this story must be absolutely bemused that the CEO and The Chair were and are still being allowed access to the AWEMA offices? In most organisations where there has been even a whiff of allegations, good HR practice means that you keep employees or trustees that might be involved in any pending investigations away from the workplace. This is for their own benefit as well as the organisation as they might have access to documentation and records that might be required for any pending or potential investigation.
I also don't understand how the Chair of the Trustees managed to get a considerable amount of money for doing work for the charity? I know for a fact you have to jump through hoops with the charity commission to pay any trustee money for work, let alone the fact that this was the Chair. You have to prove to the commission that there is no other suitable candidate that can do the work. The stories surfacing about mismanagement shed some light on this as they did not have proper policies and procedures or have any regard for charity law, it basically looks like they just had one big free for all.

There have been many "Comedy Gold" moments in this story and I am not going to stoop so low as to mention how effective the Gym membership was. Check out this article which I think is by the CEO's son. It refers to the unyielding force of capitalism and mentions that there should be a limit on how much people can earn. Better have a word with the family then!

“The defenders of the allegations have suddenly gone very quier!”
